Youth Digital Wellness
There is no one right way to roll out technology to every child at home. Whether waiting, just getting started, or already connected, we’re coming together as a community, to navigate the digital world and help each other cultivate healthy relationships with technology for our children.
Why This Matters
The impact of technology overuse in childhood is a collective problem. Community action is our most practical and immediate solution. As parents, caregivers, coaches, mentors, and youth, we can adopt a more sustainable approach to all this tech in our lives.
We can’t control the growing tsunami of technology, but we can control when, where, and how we introduce digital media to our children.
By coming together as a community, we can establish new norms that help address these challenges.
Youth Digital Wellness (YDW) Committee
To help set the stage for dialogue and action in our community, a Youth Digital Wellness initiative for our community was launched in 2025. With a newly created KSPTA board position and a committee including K-8th grade-level parent ambassadors, our goal is to empower and support our community in navigating all forms of technology with balance and intention.
Families’ choices around tech adoption (when to roll out a tablet, smartwatch, smartphone, or social media) are deeply affected by cultural norms amongst peers. Cultural change at scale can be very slow, whereas local change is swifter because there’s more interpersonal connection, visibility, and accountability. By changing tech norms together, we can reduce pressure on parents and kids, protect children’s mental health, and improve family and community life.

We are thrilled to be partnering with Kids IRL (in real life), a local county-wide effort to collectively slow down how we roll out tech to youth in Marin, from the earlier stages of tablets and watches, to smartphones and social media down the line.
Kids IRL works with ambassadors to help each community find their unique approach to slowing down tech and amplifying “in real life” experiences. Kids IRL has been by our side throughout the formation of the Youth Digital Wellness Committee, providing us with the essential guidance and support needed to bring this vision to life.
Kids IRL is powered by ScreenSense, a nonprofit based in Mill Valley that helps families and schools introduce tech slowly, in age-appropriate and intentional ways, so time on screens doesn’t come at the expense of what matters most: childhood essentials like sleep, in-person relationships, hands-on play, and time outdoors.
To learn more about their work, check out these resources for parents to support a healthier relationship with screens including guidelines for implementing parental controls for different platforms and ways to gradually roll out technology.
